3DVia on-line tools for 3D creation and Video production

Moving away from the desk-bound computer entirely to the internet as the platform, 3Dvia's on-line tools allow users to create, publish, share, and mash-up their 3D creations.

And they also appear to be allowing on-line 3D animated video creation and publishing. Plus allow capture of a 3D scene like a snapshot, except all the 3D content and setup are captures, not just the 2D picture.

Users will need to download the client applications to work with the on-line apps, though. No models can be filed off-line on one's own machine.

This does of course raise the hairy issues about mesh asset ownership and cross-application 3D asset transferability. Right now, the user-creator is tied-down to the 3DVia platform and web-hosting server. No other web-hosting service can be used to host the 3D content.

Also, non-creators will need to install the 3DVia client to view 3DVia-hosted content on-line.

Good news is that the applications are free - until further notice. (I am referring to only the freeware apps. The commercial apps from 3DVia appear to allow cross-platform for games.)

Think about this - Second Life already allows off-line and on-line creation of 3D content for free, without very much asset portability cross-platforms ( ie. non-Second Life platforms). Soem Second Life content can be edited ( BVH motions, Avatar skins ) in third-party off-platform apps such as Poser and DAZ Studio, as well as 2D graphic apps.

So, while it's nice to play with 3DVia hosted-apps for 3D content creation, how far can we go with that one, chaps ?
